The framework is sturdy. The shelves are black with an attractive "wood grain" pattern. However, the shelf surface is not paint or melamine but instead seems to be a coat of thick plastic. Mine developed a bubble in the surface when I put a really hot plate on it. So, you might not want to eat hot food while you're working at your computer! But other than that it's a very nice product for the price.Mine arrived with a large piece that was damaged in shipping. The company has a clear and helpful website -- it was very easy to find the part that needed to be replaced. They replaced it amazingly quickly. I even went to Best Buy to see how sturdy some of these desks were and I was a bit worried. However, after reading some of the reviews I decided to take risk. Risk well taken! Sturdy, good looking and compact. And even though its compact, there's still a lot of space to work with. In conclusion: great work space, good looking and sturdy at Amazon bargain.
